The Case for Studying Cultural Competence from the Perspective of the Hispanic Immigrant Patient: A State of the Science
Cheryl, R. Swanson, RN, PhD(c), CCRN - University of Texas at Tyler

Abstract: Hispanic immigrants have contributed to 56% of the nation's growth providing a challenge to nurses and other U.S. health providers in delivering culturally competent care. This state of the science paper examines representative research on the topic of cultural competence from the perspective of the Hispanic immigrant patient. Twenty-two articles were identified and summarized. It was found that the origins and cultures of the Hispanic population are often extremely varied further complicating the ability for Hispanic patients to receive culturally competent care. The research indicates that this population requires further study as to their needs and experiences with the U.S. healthcare system.

Keywords: Hispanic, Mexican, immigrant, cultural competence, perceptions of care, patient perspective, U.S. healthcare

Cultural Competency in Delivering Family Weight Management Programs: A Summary of Lessons Learned
Nicole Mareno, PhD, RN - Kennesaw State University

Abstract: Increased rates of childhood overweight and obesity are a major public health concern in the United States. Family weight management programs are one effective approach to preventing and treating childhood overweight and obesity. With changing demographics and socioeconomic disparities in the rates of childhood overweight and obesity, it is more important than ever for clinicians and researchers to understand parents’ health-related values, beliefs, and practices in order to implement culturally competent weight management programs. The process of achieving cultural competency when conducting family weight management strategies will be discussed. Specific experiences using the Ways to Enhance Children’s Activity and Nutrition (We Can!) program with a group of diverse parents in Georgia will be highlighted, along with specific lessons learned about cultural competency when delivering the We Can! Program.

Abstract: The increasing diversity of the U.S. population requires a culturally sensitive health care workforce. This article discusses the planning, implementation, and evaluation of an international clinical experience designed to promote cultural awareness and enhance the clinical skills of nurse practitioner students. The experience was unique in that the program addressed the immediate health care needs of a rural Honduran population while also collaborating with a local capacity building project. Continuity of care was addressed by including professionals from the local health care system when providing care in the schools and clinics. Student and faculty advocacy for building a local hospital supported the community’s ability to meet its own health care needs. Student, faculty, and community partner evaluations indicated that the program was effective in developing student clinical practice skills while meeting the needs of the international community.
